Bridesmaid's Dresses are pretty.

I think we can all acknowledge that the old "Bridesmaid dresses are ugly and you'll never wear them again" sentiment has gone by the wayside. Finally. But besides picking pretty dresses, brides are getting creative and making some really gorgeous choices, while still keeping their friends happy.

This is great. It's so out-of-the-box - not at all your typical bridal party look. Often people rely on their floral arrangements to bring color and excitement to their photos, but these girls don't even need flowers. They look fantastic just standing next to each other.

Classic, elegant black. These girls all look great in black satin, and they will look great when they wear it again, too. Sooner or later, some classy event will require an evening gown. Done and done. And it makes the bride (Hi Shannon! You made the blog again!) stand out and look even more stunning than she already does on her own.

I know what you're thinking: "ORANGE?! NO." But look at this - it totally works! They're wearing these cute little orange dresses that are fun but still pretty, re-wearable, and absolutely different. And the teal accents in the wedding design made this look just perfect.

"Go to WhiteHouse/BlackMarket and buy a dress you like. Be in my wedding." Is Lexy not the nicest bride ever? And even though none of these dresses even remotely match, they all work well together while representing each girl's style. Lovely.

The conference.

Last weekend, Amy and I adventured to Indiana for the regional ABC conference! It was a wonderful road trip full of show tunes and we learned a lot, namely that joining the Association of Bridal Consultants was one of the best business moves we've made so far.

Firstly, the hotel was absolutely adorable! Very interesting color scheme that somehow worked - lime green, deep red, black and white. Loved it! If you go to Columbus, IN, you should stay at the Hotel Indigo.

We settled in, then had several sessions on Saturday. We learned it's appropriate to eat asparagus with your fingers in Etiquette, that people in Indiana had no idea photo booths were all the rage as Add-Ons, and that it takes a LOT of work to become a Master Bridal Consultant.

Someday. Someday.

On Sunday, we headed out to a sweet little winery where the most valuable session to us was on pricing, fees and packages. We will soon be sitting down together to re-vamp everything we offer and how we've been pricing. We also made some very good contacts and met some awesome ladies.

Thank goodness for the ABC! National conference in Phoenix in November? Oh yes, I think so.

A lil' taste.

Amy and I plan on blogging about our first wedding at length together, but until we do, I will give you a little taste.

We were there for 13 hours, starting at noon to set up for the ceremony and reception, until about 1am when we finally left. It was an exhausting, exhilarating day and we loved every minute (except the barely eating anything part). Our walkies failed us, but everything else worked out. We pinned boutonnieres, organized deliveries, ushered guests, lit candles and we definitely made sure Meghan ate something. And it all went pretty smoothly.

Hearing "We had no IDEA it was your first wedding!" from several guests made us very, very happy.

Stay tuned!

Fairy tale.

I'm a little wedding stalker. Just FYI, if we're friends on Facebook and you have pictures of anyone's wedding (especially your own), I will shamelessly flip through each photo. And swoon. Thus I bring to you Lisa and Matt Russell, who ca-learly had an AMAZING wedding and absolutely gorgeous photography from Clark Photographics.

So. Effing. Beautiful. Look at her.

Is this not the most fantastic groom-with-groomsmen shot ever? This is what happens when theater folk get married. I'm so in love with this photo.

The fountain. The sunlight. The happy. Stunning.

I cannot get over the gorgeous shots Clark Photographics got. Many, many congratulations to Lisa and Matt. May your life together be more beautiful than any photo.

A Love Story.

In 1939, Annie Spero met Joe Fischetti at a Glenn Miller concert at a dance hall in New York City. Annie was 23 years old, and 5 feet tall - she was struggling to see the band over the crowd. Joe came up behind her and tapped her on the shoulder, asking if she needed any help. Anna nodded and offered him her elbows, and he lifted her up to watch the rest of the show. They were together from then on.

In 1941, Joe was drafted to fight in WWII. They had heard that married men were coming home from the war earlier, so they quickly got married in a courthouse. For the next 4 years, they wrote letters back and forth almost every day. Annie waited for him for those 4 years, and the very week he came home, they were married in church. Though she was legally married (what she calls "in name only"), they did not consider themselves married until their church wedding in 1945.

According to Annie (my husband's grandmother), they were married 48 years. Joe died 2 years before what would have been their 50th anniversary, though technically speaking, they were legally married for 52 years.

"We lived a great life," she says. "When we argued, we did it calmly and never yelled. And we laughed all the time."

What do two gals who realize they've really accomplished something, have finished running a wedding rehearsal and are starving, do?

That, my friends, is the flaming maki from Rise, one of the best sushi places in Chicago. We took ourselves out for a celebratory dinner after Meghan and Ryan's rehearsal last night. We went over details, we giggled a lot, and we relished in the fact that last night was truly the start of AELO.

And we toasted every single one of our fabulous couples.

Eeeek!

We are having a busy, slightly stressful and fabulous time getting ready for our first wedding on Saturday. It's all itineraries and timelines and print outs and "OMG ARE THERE BRIDESMAIDS BOUQUETS?!?!"

(There are, don't worry, it's fixed.)

So. Flippin'. Excited.

Meghan, you are the best first bride of all time.

Keep a look out for a lonnnnng blog about this weekend!

My turn!

It seems like WAY longer than two years ago that Amy and I met.

I had worked with the theater company we did Grease with before so I knew a lot of the people at callbacks, and it's true, I was schmoozy (we call her "Audition Carolyn"). It was good to see old friends. We started reading scenes as Rizzo (we were both up for it) and...forget it. SassyPants McGee got up, with sunglasses on, and became Stockard Channing. I was like "Welp. That's Rizzo." I got the call the next day that they wanted me for Marty, to which I responded "I totally forgot she existed! Hurray! I'm in!"

I wanted to be Amy's friend, even though at callbacks we both said "UGH. Who is THAT girl?" So I offered her a ride after our first rehearsal, we eventually talked books and...done. Friends. One of the best friends I've ever had, at that.

The day we spent fourteen hours straight together was the day we both realized we had a BFF situation on our hands. We didn't get on each others' nerves ONCE. Bottom line, Amy is the sassiest, most down-to-earth, tell-it-like-it-is, hilarious and fun chick I know, and I love her.

That's enough of that.

I went to school for theater. I'd been performing for years and years and years. I thought it's what I wanted to persue. But...when Amy suggested wedding planning, something clicked in my head. It made total sense. I still wanted to try professional theater, and in 2009 started having some good fortune in that regard - going in the right direction. We'd been talking about AELO for months and months trying to figure out our next steps. And though I will always have performing in my blood, I started to think about having a more realistic career.

After some life stuff (shows, her wedding, job losses, gains, reality, emotions) we got for realsies about the business. And then BOOM. Brides!! The business took off in a completely unexpected and wonderful way. And it just feels right. Also, it turns out, Amy and I both have a certain affinity for all of this. It's a combination of our personalities and experience and the fact that we completely and absolutely LOVE IT.

So here's to our eight couples for taking a chance on a couple of chicks with a dream. You guys are amazing.

It is exhilarating to say that we weren't content with where we were, so we decided to do something about it. This little business is my heart and soul, and like Amy said...I'm a proud mama.

stay fab, you wonderful, supportive, loving, incredible friends of AELO,

carolyn

Evolution.

I know parts of this story have been told in this blog as well as on our website, but in light of our very special First Wedding, I thought it might be nice to share how this business really came to be.

Carolyn and I met almost exactly 2 years ago in early 2008. We saw each other across the room at callbacks for "Grease," and disliked one another immediately. I had remembered seeing her at auditions, analyzing her as "the competition," and wondering why she was being so disgustingly NICE to EVERYONE. (Note: I don't have it in me to suck up. I just don't. Carolyn is amazing at it. And thus, much better at theater than I am. I digress.) At callbacks, I knew we were both up for the role of Rizzo and was immediately annoyed that she was really talented. (She recalls thinking that I had the part in the bag...welp). I didn't know a single person in the room (she knew all of them, it seemed), so I sang my song, read my lines, and left. Didn't give her a second thought.
At the read-thru, I realized that she would be playing Marty and that we would be fellow Pink Ladies. I remember hoping that she didn't annoy me too much. At some point that night, she looked over at me and said, "Hey, you live in the city, yes? I'm giving you a ride."

Oh. Ok.

There were a few awkward car rides. I rode in the back of her little Honda Civic, while she and Megan (our Frenchy) chatted about a whole bunch of people I didn't know. I was beginning to think that this would be a very long 4 months, until one day she dropped Megan off first and she and I were (gasp) left alone in the car together. And....we talked about books. And then we were friends. Turns out, she doesn't annoy me in the slightest (which is weird) and I love her to death. So, on to the point of this story.

At that time, I was in my first year of graduate school pursuing my Master of Social Work. I have a psychology degree and always planned on doing psychotherapy in some manner or another, which you have to have a masters for. In the summer of 2008, I was over it. I wasn't learning anything new; in fact, I felt like I was paying a whole lot of money to do my 4 year degree all over again. I started to wonder whether that was really what I wanted to do anymore, and that combined with feeling like I was wasting time and money helped me decide to quit grad school.

Carolyn and I had talked about how her passion was theater, and that was what she wanted to do for a living, but she become stuck in office jobs because that was more practical. I had also found myself slipping into a cycle of only looking for/taking office jobs, because you can't do much else with a psychology degree and one year of grad school. I was feeling really down about dropping out of school, because that was my "career path" that I had chosen, and I didn't know what I was going to do. Carolyn and I were chatting online, and I told her this, and then I said, "Can't we just start our own wedding planning business?" And she said, "Yeah, let's do that!"

So...we did. We started looking into how the heck you actually start a business, which took months to figure out. We started having "meetings" (I use quotations because our first one was on Montrose Beach. We didn't do much), brainstormed a name and a color scheme (totally different from what it is now), and slowly but surely started plugging away at it. It took us a long time to grasp what we were going to have to do to make this happen, and also life got in the way: my wedding, multiple job losses and changes, both of us moving, emotional crises, etc.

And finally, here we are. We have 8 contracted brides and several more inquiries about our services, and our very first wedding this Saturday. Sometimes it hits me that we really did this - we really built our own business from the ground and made it exactly what we wanted it to be. I'm a proud mama. :)

Phew.

We had quite a productive day yesterday! We met with Meghan and Ryan at their venue, Salvage One, met their florist and hammered out every detail of their wedding day. This is exactly what we needed. Today, we're typing up our notes and making an itinerary for the whole day.

After leaving Salvage One, we headed out to RoPo to pick up the dress
forms from some amazing chicas in my life (thank you thank you, Brianna and Ruth!) and to our surprise...they MATCH! Hurray!

Then we headed to the dollar store and Target (tip: stay away from Dollar Trees in Roger's Park. Just sayin'. It was an adventure). We were at Target for a good two hours, so long that the guys working there that we kept bugging started laughing at us. But we did get everything on our VERY long list. And I'm totally gonna write it all down, type it up and tape it in the case, because there is so much in it that we won't know what we have!

We somehow fit all of that into our adorable little wheelie case. THAT was a decision, but we ended up getting quite a deal on an adorable pink polka-dot case that is absolutely perfect for us. It even came with two extra bags, one in which we stored the "beauty" stuff and one that we put all of our extras in. I can't wait until one of our brides says "Omg, I forgot to shave!" and we pull out the disposable razor and shaving cream. Very exciting.

Our only sadness is that we couldn't organize it the way we wanted. Oh well. We'll make a list. :)

We also bought walkie-talkies at Best Buy, and while the walkies were perfect, the headsets we bought to go with them didn't work! Thanks, Best Buy employee who didn't really know what he was talking about. So we have to take a trip back to get headsets that do work.

Other than that, WOAH, super productive day! We feel so much more prepared than we did before, and we cannot wait til next Saturday. We feel so good about this business. We just...seem to have a flair for wedding planning. It's the theater + psychology + OCD that makes it a perfect combination for us. We are LOVING it.

A hot color combo for 2010

Check this out: Eggplant, Cornflower Blue, and Magenta. I really, really like this. I'm big on saturated bold colors, and I think these would be a great choice for a fun, young couple with great taste and style. It gives you so many choices, and a guarantee that your wedding will be anything but boring!

I'm thinking one or two bridesmaid dress in each color, great eggplant table linens, and really interesting and fun wedding invitations. So pretty!

For your enjoyment...

A few months ago, I blogged a little spotlight of my beautiful friends who have gotten married in the last couple of years. Here are two more very special ones: Katie + Paul, July 24th 2009, and Jill + Andrew, October 24th, 2009.

Katie and Paul - one of the cutest couples I've ever known.

She's gorgeous!

Jill and Andrew - they're so perfect together.

I love this look on her face...it's a perfect representation of how she feels about him.

I mean...is this the most stunning picture you've ever seen?

They each had amazing weddings that were unique, fun, and filled with laughter and family. I'm so proud and happy for my friends.

Yay, weddings!

On Monday evening, we Skyped with our brand new bride Sharon and her fiancee Ted. We are planning their October wedding from afar...Sharon is in Asia for the majority of the year! It's whole new challenge for AELO and we are excited. This weekend is also super busy for us. We are meeting with two of our couples and FINALLY shopping for walkie-talkies and a bunch of other stuff AELO needs. I know I can't wait! Our first wedding is merely ten days away!

Side note: How COOL is Skype? I'd never done it before and it was super fun. I'm a nerd.

Also, if you're in for a laugh, head on over to Tacky Weddings. I've been laughing all morning. The following footwear is actually being advertised on The Lovely Bride.
What that is, is a high heeled sneaker for the sporty bride who wishes to dance.

What ever happened to the ballet flat?! And don't worry, gals, this monstrosity comes in wedges too!

Eek.
